What Is the World Made of

Medical journalist Michael Mosley introduces the fundamental questions and the great forces of history that have shaped the story of science. What is out there? What is the world made of? What is the secret of life?

This is the second episode of the series, trying to find the answer to the question: What is the world made of, through scientific history.  This is a story that moves from the secret labs of the alchemists and their search for gold to the creation of the world’s first synthetic dye, and onto the invention of the transistor.  By trying to answer this question, scientists have created theories from elements to atoms, and the strange concepts of quantum physics that underpin our modern, technological world.

  1. Excellent presentation. A liberal Arts College education.

    Michael Mosely medical background brings practical insight into science. What is it good for. He puts priority into the presentation, separating the wheat from the chaff.

    My only comment is that the Universe is not expanding. Edwin Hubble did not conclude that the redshift indicated expansion. Hubble said the redshift: is an ” hitherto unrecognized principle of nature”. Even though Hubble, is the “father” of redshift, he rejected premature conclusions.

    The redshift is an indicator of balance between the gravitational potential energy (-mGM/r) centripetal force vp/r and the momentum energy , (cmV=cP) centrifugal force, cDel.P= -cp/r cos(RV). At Continuity Condition, the centripetal force equals the centrifugal force and vp/r=cp/r cos(RV) giving v/c= cos(RV), this is the redshift!

    The redshift indicates the universe is not expanding. Nature seems to prefer Continuity and and stable orbits. The real law of Gravity is :

    W= -mGM/r + cP = -mu/r + cmV= m[-u/r + cV]= m[-u/r, cV]

    This law takes intto account that the mass m is moving. has vector momentum (P=mV) and vector energy cP. Energy is a four dimensional quantity, a Quaternion Quantity. and the the vector energy is the so-called “Dark Energy”
